CMST 60 Public Speaking – Course Description
This course is an introduction to the process of human communication with an emphasis on public speaking. The subjects covered are speech topic selection, audience analysis, information competency (e.g. researching, evaluating, and using supporting materials), presentation outlining, principles of effective speech delivery, critical evaluation of speeches, and presentation of informative and persuasive speeches. Most students will have the opportunity to be recorded and to use presentational technology. College-level writing skills will be expected on all papers, outlines, and short essays. This course may be offered in a distance education format.

As described in the syllabus and in the online course sign-ups/schedule offerings, Due to the nature of this public speaking course, some assignments will require live video participation via Zoom on three specific dates. Students are required to attend a virtual event on Friday, May 9th from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., via Zoom. The instructor will provide more information at the start of the term. Students will also be required to deliver an Informative speech, LIVE, via Zoom, during the 4th week of class and can choose from the following dates/times: April 8th from 6:00-9:00pm, April 9th from 9:00 a.m. – 12 p.m, via Zoom. Students will also be required to prepare and Persuasive speech during the 6th week of class LIVE, via Zoom, and choose from the following dates: April 29th from 6:00-10:00 p.m. or April 30th from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. THESE LIVE PRESENTATIONS MUST BE DONE ON THE DATES ABOVE TO PASS THE CLASS! Students enrolling in this section will need effective computer skills and reliable Internet access to use the learning management system (Canvas). This course may require the use of Microsoft Office 365, which can be accessed at no charge through the student portal. The course may require webcam proctoring services and students could be asked to provide their own webcam. The instructor will provide further details.
